Wisdom from late Chinatown architect Joe Wai on 105 Keefer
A quote from the respected late architect who designed the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden and the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum and Archives building
On January 6, 2017, just five days before his passing, renowned architect and freeway fighter Joe Wai, who designed notable Chinatown landmarks like the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden and the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum and Archives building, and restored the Chinese Freemasons Building, wrote a letter to the City of Vancouver's Urban Design Panel about 105 Keefer. He ended his letter with this poignant statement:
“Chinatown requires your leadership to ensure that development, such as this application, in this crucial historic area, serve to build communities first and not just to maximize profit.”
We need to take leadership to put people over profits at 105 Keefer.
