What to expect at the Chinatown Popup Food Corner this Sun, July 7
We're debuting new cultural food offerings at the Chinatown Variety Show
We’re ecstatic to introduce our new popup food corner at the Chinatown Variety Show Extravaganza this Sunday, July 7 from 2-5pm at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Plaza!
With Cindy’s San Lee Market almost selling out her fresh Chinese groceries at the last event, we decided to double down on supporting existing culturally-appropriate businesses in Chinatown while also incubating new ones at our events.
Here’s what to expect this upcoming Sunday and a small story on each:
Cindy’s Ho Yummy Wonton Stand 水雲鲜好食檔
Amy’s friend Cindy was so inspired by Amy’s business success selling at our Cantonese Opera event that she wanted sell something too. Cindy told us her wontons were “HO YUMMY!” and that her ultimate dream is to start a wonton and karaoke bar at the old Hon’s location in Chinatown.
We took on the challenge and said: “Ok Cindy, let’s make your dream happen.”
So over the last few weeks, we’ve been helping Cindy navigate the process on getting started — everything from applying for a Vancouver Coastal Health permit to visiting community prep kitchens to pricing and packaging.
In fact, today, we’re hosting a wonton wrapping workshop to help Cindy make her debut batch of wontons.
Cindy will be bringing hundreds of wontons to sell on Sunday. She’s been calling us almost every other day to ask how many people we think will be there.
Don’t disappoint Auntie Cindy. Come drop by on Sunday and support Cindy on her first step of making her wonton and karaoke shop dream come true.
Dou Lok Fong Tofu Pudding Dessert 豆樂坊
Did you know that Chinatown used to have a tofu pudding house right where Bao Bei is right now? It was called MyLite Soya Foods. You might have memories running in to get a big bucket of sweet tofu pudding for week.
We thought: Wouldn’t it be fun to bring it back to Chinatown? In partnership with one of Chinatown Together’s youth team members, Derek, we’re doing exactly that — bringing the classic tofu pudding dessert back to Chinatown with the Dou Lok Fong tofu pudding stand 豆樂坊.
For $5, you get a bowl of tofu pudding with your choice of regular or ginger syrup. An extra $1 will get you a scoop of grass jelly topping.
Plus, partial proceeds from every bowl will be donated to Chinatown Together’s programming!
If you love tofu pudding and want to see it at every event, come support Dou Lok Fong. If the tofu pudding sells out, we’ll definitely bring it back again with even more toppings to choose from.
San Lee Market 生利公司
And of course, we’re bringing back Amy’s San Lee Market, a local Chinatown fresh grocer. Because of popular demand, she’ll be selling more baby bok choi and Shanghai bok choi this time in addition to other fresh Chinese veggies and fruits that’s hard to find elsewhere.
San Lee is one of the last three culturally-appropriate fresh grocers in Chinatown that the neighbourhood’s residents, including many low-income seniors depends on, so supporting Amy is supporting cultural food security in Chinatown.
This Sunday, come watch the 28+ talented community performers dance, sing, and more, play mahjong, win prizes, buy groceries, snack on Cindy’s wontons, and slurp some tofu pudding!
🗓️WHEN: Sunday, July 7 2024, 2:00PM to 5:00PM
