You can be the next Sun Yat Sen Garden Executive Director
Yes, that's right! And here's our wish list for the next ED...
It’s true! You can be the next Executive Director of the beloved Dr. Sun Yat Sen Garden!
With the departure of the current Executive Director, who is moving on to new adventures at the HR MacMillan Space Centre on March 1 (and who has also been making headlines regarding the VPD board here and here), the stage is set for a fresh chapter in the Garden's 38-year journey.
The incoming Executive Director (perhaps you!) will have the chance to shape a new vision for the Garden, prioritizing community-first values and fostering a space that celebrates culture and inclusivity.
Here’s our wish list for the next Executive Director of the Garden:
A champion who stands shoulder to shoulder with community members in the battle against the gentrification of Chinatown.
A host of culturally-appropriate events that place community engagement at the forefront.
A genuine advocate for allowing elders in the community to enjoy the Garden as a year-round recreation space.
A proactive leader committed to ensuring the Garden and its surroundings are accessible to all.
Think you’d be a good fit? Apply to become the next Executive Director of the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Garden:
Help us activate the Chinatown Plaza Mall for Lantern Festival 元宵節 (Sat, Feb 24 1pm)
With the support of City of Vancouver, Chinatown Together is hosting our popular Tea & Paint event to activate the Chinatown Plaza Mall! This will be our third installation, featuring local artist and friend @Lucky.Munyi.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 24th, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, coinciding with the 元宵節 Yuan Xiao Jie, also known as the Lantern Festival, where we celebrate the first full moon of the 2024 lunar new year.
We’re hoping we can continue to use the city-owned Chinatown Plaza Mall for more cultural activities that’s open and accessible to all, but we’ll need everyone to participate to show the City that there’s demand for it.
Everyone is welcome to participate in this guided watercolour class, where @Lucky.Munyi will provide painting instructions. In line with the Lantern Festival theme, we will be painting lanterns and florals. After the guided session, you'll have the opportunity for free-style painting, allowing your creativity to flourish. All necessary painting supplies will be provided, along with a wide selection of teas to keep your hydrated while you flex your art skills.
Instructions will be available in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Tea and snacks will be provided. This is a mask mandatory event.
Date: Sat, Feb 24 1-3pm
Location: Chinatown Plaza Mall (106 Keefer St)
Pssst….We run out of funding in July
It’s true, we’re run out of funding to put on events in July with no secured sources of funding on the horizon (a federal grant we were counting on fell through yesterday because of eligibility reasons where — long story short — apparently making cultural foods as community isn’t considered practicing arts and culture), so we need your help to keep things going. If you love the free and inclusive public cultural events that we host in Chinatown, please consider donating!
Free Big Fight in Little Chinatown film tickets if you volunteer! (Sat, Feb 24 6pm)
We’ll be exhibiting Chinatown Together at the KDocs Film Festival, Vancouver’s premier social justice film festival where they’ll be playing Big Fight in Little Chinatown on Sat, Feb 24 at 6pm with a post-screening panel.
We’re looking for one more volunteers to help us exhibit before the film at 5pm and after the film. You’ll receive a free ticket to see the film if you volunteer with us!
If you can volunteer, please hit reply to this email.
If you’d like to just watch the film, get tickets here.
