Uplifting or Gentrifying? Townhall for a Better DTES (Jun 26)
Plus upcoming events in Chinatown this month
The City of Vancouver has unveiled plans to bring 32-storey market housing towers into the Downtown Eastside, posing the biggest gentrification threat that the DTES and Chinatown have faced in over a decade. Making matters worse, Mayor Ken Sim and City Council have also voted to freeze new supportive housing development at the same time.
Why this issue matters deeply to Chinatown:
Many low-income Chinese seniors live in the DTES and rely on its vital services
Numerous Chinese clan associations, organizations, and businesses are rooted within the DTES boundaries
What happens to Chinatown’s neighbours affects us all
The Carnegie Housing Project is hosting a Town Hall to bring the community together to push back and envision a better shared future.
Date & Time: Thursday, June 26 6:00–8:00 PM
Location: Carnegie Theatre, 401 Main St. (inside the Carnegie Community Centre)
This is a space for the DTES community to create a shared vision and stand against the City’s devastating plan.
