TODAY at 2:30pm: The Power of Chinatown and Spatial Justice - Book Talk
Learn how gentrification is (re)structuring LA's Chinatown
A special invite from friends at SFU’s Department of Geography:
In The Power of Chinatown: Searching for Spatial Justice in Los Angeles, Laureen D. Hom details how LA’s Chinatown is more than just a symbolic and historic neighbourhood.
Threats of gentrification and forced displacement are also (re)structuring its material and social conditions. Hom interrogates how community leaders are responding to neighbourhood development and change. It explains what their responses mean for creating community, political belonging, and a just future.
While focusing on LA, the book has strong resonances with the experience of Vancouver’s Chinatown. Dr. Hom will present an overview of her book, followed by questions from SFU Geography students, and then from other audience members.
