Solidarity Actions: Supporting Allied Struggles
We’re trying out a new section to occasionally highlight the shared struggles of displacement and cultural erasure our communities face, and how we can stand with one another. Our fight in Chinatown is part of broader, connected struggles across the city and around the world.
Help the Vancouver Tenants Union battle a predatory landlord in court!
The Vancouver Tenants Union, the same group that backed Chinatown in the fight against billionaire Beedie, urgently needs support.
A predatory landlord, Andrzej Kowalski, has launched a lawsuit against them after the VTU intervened to help tenants he wanted to evict. VTU is raising $35k to fight it!
They’ve supported Chinatown’s fight against gentrification for years, including the most recent 105 Keefer/570 Columbia fight last month. Now, it’s our turn to show up for them.
You can donate directly, or boost their efforts by attending their upcoming Screenprinting Party fundraiser on Saturday, December 13th.
Film Screening and Emergency Fundraiser to Stop Cultural Erasure and Genocide in Sudan (Sat, Dec 6)
SaveChinatownYVR fights against displacement and cultural erasure in Chinatown, and our friends at the Sudan Solidarity Collective Vancouver are fighting against ongoing genocide, mass displacement, and cultural erasure in Sudan.
How does Sudan relate to Vancouver and Canada?
CBC recently reported that rifles made in Abbotsford and tanks from a Canadian-owned company have been used by the RSF, the militia responsible for the genocide with blood visible from space. At the same time, Prime Minister Carney is expanding AI, LNG, and infrastructure investment ties with the UAE, a key backer of the RSF, raising serious concerns about Canada’s role in the crisis.
Why it matters
We have a responsibility to learn what’s happening, understand how these issues connect back home, and support people resisting violence, displacement, and erasure. Our struggle in Chinatown is part of a broader global fight against displacement and erasure.
