Show your love for Chinatown tomorrow (Sat, Aug 19) + Spirit of the Square event
Two upcoming events in Chinatown to protest gentrification
The In the Mood for Love for Chinatown event is tomorrow (Sat, Aug 19) at the Chinatown Memorial Plaza starting at 1:30pm!
Celebrate Qixi Festival (aka "Chinese Valentine's Day") with a free Sun Yat-Sen Public Park walking tour with ex-Dr Sun Yat Sen Garden docent Kelly, classical Chinese music, love-themed snacks, and community portraits to continue our protest against Beedie’s 105 Keefer and the SYS Garden’s support for it!
Please bring your own chair if you can as seating will be prioritized for seniors, and dress in cute traditional outfits like qipaos for free community portraits if you’d like!
Also, read and share Kelly’s reasons for cohosting this event to protest 105 Keefer and the gentrification of Chinatown.
Spirit of the Square by Chinatown Today (Sat, Aug 27)
Our friends at Chinatown Today are hosting the Spirit of the Square event on Sunday, August 27th from 3 PM- 6 PM.
Spirit of the Square honours the Hungry Ghost Festival (鬼節 or 中元節) at the Chinese Memorial Square. The Hungry Ghost festival is held during the seventh month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. During this time, the hell gates are opened and restless ghosts are free to roam among us for food and entertainment.
Throughout the day, there’ll zine-making, community story-mapping, and other interactive activities hosted and facilitated by Chinatown Today and various artists in the community. It’s an all-ages inclusive event.
Chinatown Today is also looking for volunteers for the event! Fill out this form to help out.
We need your help!
After hosting several events, we’re now getting an overwhelming demand from the community to host even more events stretching well into September. To help us with the costs of expanding the event series, consider making a donation to the community events fund to make the events free and accessible to as many people as possible.
