Help push out evil at Sun Yat Sen + #METOO in China exhibit on Mar 9
Lots happening in Chinatown in March!
Help push out evil spirits and welcome spring with tai chi in Chinatown on Sat. Mar 9!
90+ year old community elder and activist Mrs. Ma will be teaching us tai chi at the Sun Yat Sen Courtyard next Saturday. We’re excited to be able to reactivate the public spaces in Chinatown for the community despite it always being locked up by the gates controlled by the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Garden Society and Chinese Cultural Centre.
Come join us at this all ages event! There’ll be food and refreshments for attendees.
Date and time: Sat, March 9, 2024 - 2:00PM-3:00PM
Place: Sun Yat Sen Courtyard, Chinatown
Please note that this will be located at the free Sun Yat-Sen Courtyard (not the paid Garden). The entrance is located on Carrall St.
Interpretation for instructions will be provided in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
For this event, we’ll be donating all proceeds to our friends at Yarrow for their programming for seniors in Chinatown. We suggest a donation of $10 if you have the ability to donate, but no one will be turned away.
This event is supported by Vancouver Foundation’s Neighbourhood Small Grants and Vancouver Parks Board.
Can’t make it to this tai chi event? Yarrow is also hosting an indoor tai chi event with Mrs. Ma this upcoming Saturday, March 2 from 2-3pm at Level 2 of the Sun Wah Centre, 268 Keefer Street. RSVP here.
Pssst….We run out of funding in July
It’s true, we’re run out of funding to put on events in July with no secured sources of funding on the horizon, so we need your help to keep things going. If you love the free and inclusive public cultural events that we host in Chinatown to push back against gentrification, please consider donating!
#METOO in Chinatown Exhibit and Documentary
Curated by our friends at the Vancouver UniCome, the #MeToo in China Exhibition opens on March 9th! 2018 marks the first year of the #MeToo Movement in China. Six years have passed, many cases have gradually disappeared from people’s sight or been erased by censorship.
The #MeToo Exhibition is a testimony of countless "MeToo", a journey of how "MeToo" has evolved to “Rice Bunny”, a human library of victims' actions, and a continuation of the resistance of survivors and Chinese feminist activists.
On Mar 10, the exhibition will host the world premiere of Demand an Answer from History, a documentary about the landmark sexual harassment case Xianzi v. Zhu Jun, and the experiences of the MeToo supporters outside the court.
Exhibition: Mar 9 SAT (7–10 pm), Mar 10 SUN– Mar 12 TUE (10am – 8pm)
Opening & Panelist Sharing: Mar 9 SAT 7 pm
Admission: The exhibition is free, donation is appreciated.
Location: 312 Main St
Documentary Premiere: Mar 10 SUN 7 pm, spots are limited, reserve your ticket now.
