Our friends at Chinatown Today posted an Instagram video of places in Chinatown to visit. The video was interesting, but what was more interesting was the comment section.
One of the coaches at Diaz Combat Sports (DCS), a gym in Chinatown, posted these comments:
“Protectors of Chinatown”?!?
“Better than relying [on] one white [guy] or white washed asians to do anything”?!?
Wha…?!?
The comments have since been scrubbed, and we’ve received this note from the main DSC account:
This situation really brings up the question: What does it mean for businesses to be good neighbours in Chinatown?
By the way, if you’re looking for something less combative, and more calm, we’re hosting Ink & Unity, a Chinese calligraphy, traditional tea ceremony, and pipa music event next Saturday, March 23.
The calligraphy workshop with the calligraphy master is now full, but there will be a freestyle calligraphy zone, tea, and music that’s open to everyone even if you weren’t able to register for the workshop.
So come join us for culture and community, because community is what we can ultimately rely on at the end of the day as the real protector of Chinatown!
