Last Day: Protect Chinatown's last green space
The City of Vancouver want to turn Chinatown's last green space into a firehall
The City of Vancouver proposed for the last green space in Chinatown to be paved over for a temporary fire hall for the next 8-10 years. More info here and on the City of Vancouver website here.
Today, July 16th, is the last day to submit comments to the City of Vancouver. There are 2 actions to take at the end of the email.
Why does this matter? This is the last and only public green space that’s City land in Chinatown. It’s a place where children play, people meander and read on the grass, have picnics, and gather. It’s also the only public/city-owned space in the neighbourhood with shade from mature trees. Finally, it’s also located right next to several major social housing complexes of low income residents providing respite for all.
Chinatown and Strathcona residents have already rejected a firehall in their residential area once in its history. In the late 1960s, they successfully pushed back a firehall that was to be at Pender and Jackson, across from Strathcona Elementary School. Thankfully, the site eventually became Mao Dan Gardens co-op for community folks instead.

It feels like déjà vu.
Help save this last patch of green space for Chinatown and the surrounding community. Two actions to take now:
