Kick Out Gentrification Kung Fu Class + Photos from In the Mood for Love for Chinatown
Also, save the date for the 105 Keefer Protest Thank You Party on Sept 16!
Kick out gentrification at 105 Keefer and in Chinatown with a free kung fu and lion dancing workshop with the Chau Luen Athletic Club on Sept 2 from 2-5pm at the Chinatown Memorial Plaza.
You'll learn the basics of kung fu, lion dancing, and drumming from one of Chinatown's longstanding benevolent society athletic clubs. There will also be a kung fu and lion dancing demo, and a post-workshop snack social to re-energize and connect with the community!
All ages welcome. Beginner-friendly!
We need your help!
After hosting several events, we’re now getting an overwhelming demand from the community to host even more events stretching well into September. To help us with the costs of expanding the event series, consider making a donation to the community events fund to make the events free and accessible to as many people as possible.
Save the Date: 105 Keefer Protest Thank You Dance Party on Sat, Sept 16!
To thank everyone for a decade of effort of fighting 105 Keefer and gentrification in Chinatown, we’re hosting a thank you dance party to celebrate you! There’ll be cheeky carnival games, dancing, cake, and a special screening of late community activist Sid Chow Tan’s community films. Sat, Sept 16 — save the date!
Spirit of the Square by Chinatown Today (Sat, Aug 27)
Our friends at Chinatown Today are hosting the Spirit of the Square event on Sunday, August 27th from 3 PM- 6 PM.
Spirit of the Square honours the Hungry Ghost Festival (鬼節 or 中元節) at the Chinese Memorial Square. The Hungry Ghost festival is held during the seventh month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. During this time, the hell gates are opened and restless ghosts are free to roam among us for food and entertainment.
Throughout the day, there’ll zine-making, community story-mapping, and other interactive activities hosted and facilitated by Chinatown Today and various artists in the community. It’s an all-ages inclusive event.
Chinatown Today is also looking for volunteers for the event! Fill out this form to help out.
Photos from In the Mood for Love for Chinatown: Qixi Festival
Thank you to everyone who came out to the Qixi Festival event on Saturday to celebrate our love for Chinatown and community, and to protest Beedie’s gentrifier 105 Keefer developer and their supporters Dr. Sun Yat Sen Garden at the same time! Check out this thread for all that happened during the event.
If you took community portraits at the event, your portraits are located here.
