Mark your calendars and join us for an unforgettable kung fu and lion dance workshop experience right in the heart of Chinatown!
If you missed out on last year's Kick Out Gentrification Kung Fu and Lion Dance workshop, fret not, as we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Chau Luen Athletics for another exciting hands-on workshop this year for all ages.
We’re throwing it back and hosting the event back at the Chinatown Memorial Plaza again — the original site of our anti-gentrification protests against Beedie’s luxury condo development 105 Keefer that’s right next to the square.
WHEN: Saturday, June 8, 2024, 1:00PM to 4:00PM
WHERE: Chinatown Memorial Plaza - 135-137 Keefer St
This event is supported by the Government of Canada, ParticiPACTION, the City of Vancouver, and generous community donors like you.
Before you head to the Kung Fu and Lion Dance Workshop, you should check out the Five Colour Bracelets for Dragon Boat Festival with Yarrow, and support their seniors programming!
Recap of Tea and Paint Lotuses with lucky.munyi on Sat, May 25

It was a heart-warming gathering of community this past Saturday, May 25 at the Chinatown Plaza Mall for Tea and Paint with @lucky.munyi. There were so many people that we ran out of table space even though we had procured more tables just days before.
We learned how to paint a lotus with watercolours, while sipping on tea from the @thefakesaibot and munching on sticky buns from Zhao Mah Bakery. Late activist and elder William Lim’s Library was a hit with everyone again! Everyone was able to bring home a little treasure from his collection to enjoy. And our friends at Yarrow brought their new special edition tie dyed t-shirts from their fundraiser merch collection to showcase too.
These events have truly started to become a community gathering and social space for all ages. We’re in awe to see how everyone has come together to practice our culture in place. Did you go to the event? We’d like your feedback in this 2 minute survey.
Help us continue to host Chinatown Together’s events for the rest of the year by donating to the Chinatown Together Cultural Fund. We have lots of exciting events planned for you so that we can all push back against gentrification in Chinatown together, but we need your help in covering our funding gap to help make it possible. Please consider donating so that we can continue to grow and sustain the programming from July until the end of the year:
Why Chinatown Together host cultural events in Chinatown
Started through decade-long community protest of Beedie’s gentrifier condo proposal, 105 Keefer, we created Chinatown Together events to use culture to push back gentrification.
In the face of ongoing gentrification, it's crucial for us to unite in support of our Chinatown and DTES communities, honour our elders and their cultural heritage, and revel in the collective joy of artistic expression.
Through each Chinatown Together event, we are dedicated to backing grassroots efforts, amplifying the genuine voices of our community, reclaiming our cultural roots and safe spaces, and standing firmly united against encroaching gentrification. Celebrating community joy is our most powerful resistance to these forces - let's come together and celebrate in Chinatown as one!
