Our neighbours at the Powell Street Festival is hosting the 2nd Annual Setsubun New Year Event from 11:30-2:30pm tomorrow (Sat, Feb 3) at Oppenheimer Park. It’s a free community event!
Get toasty by sitting around a Sacred Fire hosted by Elder Veronica and throw roasted soybeans for the tradition of mamemaki. Chit chat with others with a piping hot, homemade Japanese Curry Rice meal in the park. The meal will be supplied to anyone who attends.
Grab a delicious free curry lunch and enjoy the festivities at Setsubun before heading over to Sun Wah Centre for the banner-making workshop in Chinatown from 2-5pm.
Also, Distro Disco will be at the event. and they will have a pop-up tent where you can drop off your warm winter items and learn more. Please consider making a contribution, if you can!
Amplify Chinatown: Community Banner Making Workshop (Sat, Feb 3, 2-5pm)
Join us for a community banner making workshop this Sat, Feb 3 from 2-5pm at Sun Wah Centre 4th floor to amplify Chinatown organizing and to march in the Lunar New Year Parade!
Inspired by queer Chicago artist Aram Han Sifuentes and their Protest Banner Lending Library, this free, intergenerational event is for the community to come together to create protest and celebration banners to amplify Chinatown and our collective organizing.
Community elder and expert seamstress, 張女士 Ms. Zhang, along with artist Beverly Ho, will guide participants to collaboratively make banners for the community or of your own design. A small lunch will be offered.
We need irons, ironing board, fabric, and more cotton bedsheets for banners, so bring some if you can!
Joe Y. Wai Memorial Dialogue: The Future of Seniors’ Care (Sat, Feb 3, 4-6pm)
The Joe Y. Wai Memorial Dialogue is held in commemoration of Joe's many civic contributions with a discussion on the future of seniors' care in Vancouver. Hosted by various Chinatown-based organization with UBC, this event will feature pronounced community organizers and advocates of seniors' housing in Chinatown, which will be followed by an open forum discussion moderated by Dr. Henry Yu.
