We're bringing the infamous Chinese Square Dancing to Chinatown
Flex and Flow with community on April 27
Have you ever heard of Chinese square dancing? No, not American do-si-do, but the popular recreation activity in China and around the world where everyone dances to music together in public squares.
Perhaps you’re familiar with the viral videos of the principal teaching the shuffle dance at a high school or next level square dancing in China.
People have definitely taken square dancing to extremes, but at the end of the day, it’s about being healthy and active with community in public — everything we strive for at Chinatown Together.
So that’s we’re bringing Chinese square dance to a public space in Chinatown on Saturday, April 27!
Long-time Chinatown community elder Swallow Zhou will be leading "Flex and Flow", a guided dance session, where we'll stretch, move, and groove together in the Chinatown Plaza Mall.
This all-ages event is beginner-friendly and focuses on enhancing flexibility and mobility. Swallow, a respected Vancouver Chinatown elder and member of the DTES dance troupe, brings a wealth of experience to this community event.
WHEN: Saturday, April 27 2024, 1:00PM to 4:00PM
WHERE: Chinatown Plaza Mall - 106 Keefer Street
Snacks and beverages will be provided, courtesy of Chinatown Together throughout the event. To ensure inclusivity, interpretation for instructions will be available in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
This event was made possible with the support of the City of Vancouver, and generous community donors like you!
The Chinese Unicorns are waiting for you this upcoming Sat, Apr 13
The Chinese unicorns (qilins) have been sleeping in the attics of Chinatown for almost a decade…and they’re waiting for you to help reawaken them.
Join a special performance and dance workshop to reawaken the qilins with the Vancouver Tsung Tsin Hakka Association 溫哥華客屬崇正會 at the Sun Yat Sen Courtyard on Saturday, April 13 at 3:30pm. You won’t want to miss it!
WHEN: Saturday, April 13 2024, 3:30pm - 5:30pm
WHERE: Dr. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Courtyard, 578 Carrall Street
