How Chinatown Together got rejected then unrejected to march in the Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade
Come make a banner on Feb 3, then march with Chinatown Together on Feb 11 at the Chinatown Spring Festival Parade!
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to march at the Chinatown Spring Festival Parade for Lunar New Year? Well wonder no more! Because you can march with Chinatown Together in the parade on Sun, Feb 11. Register here to be part of the parade and join our banner making workshop to make your own parade banner this Sat, Feb 3 here.
Getting into the parade was not without drama though. After a puzzling initial rejection from the parade planning committee (see letter below) and a mysterious phone call after we asked why Chinatown Together was rejected, the committee consisting of very familiar Chinatown organizations surprisingly reversed their decision after an alleged administrative review which we were able to overcome, and now Chinatown Together is let into the parade! (Though sadly, we’ve heard other youth have not been so lucky.)
Nevertheless, Lunar New Year is a time of celebrating and practicing our culture in place. So come support, and march with Chinatown Together as we think the best community celebrations are ones we can all celebrate together! RSVP to march in the parade here and to RSVP to make your own banner here.

Inspired by queer Chicago artist Aram Han Sifuentes and their Protest Banner Lending Library, this free, intergenerational event is for the community to come together to create protest and celebration banners to amplify Chinatown and our collective organizing.
Community elder and expert seamstress, 張女士 Ms. Zhang, along with artist Beverly Ho, will guide participants to collaboratively make banners for the community or of your own design. A small lunch will be offered.
We need more cotton bedsheets for banners, so bring some if you can!
