bao & brew: poetry in the plaza (Sun, Sept 24)
Show solidarity against “baoing” down to unjust development in the DTES and Chinatown communities
bao and brew is an afternoon of poetry and political button making to show solidarity against “baoing” down to unjust development in the DTES and Chinatown communities.
The event is cohosted and curated by Candie Tanaka, a writer, artist, and librarian who’s been a fierce activist during the entire 105 Keefer fight.
Use your creative skills to make some political protest pins at the button making station that support grassroots initiatives working to improve neighbourhoods.
Relax and listen to local poetry while enjoying buns from Zhao Mah paired with VITA teas. Local musician Mark McLeod will provide some soothing music at the event too. There will be a open mic after the lineup.
There will be poets from the Muriel's Journey Poetry Prize, a unique poetry prize that celebrates the legacy of Downtown Eastside poet-activist Muriel Marjorie by requiring community activism by entrants as its only submission fee.
All supplies and refreshments will be provided, please bring your own chair if you can as priority will go to seniors and those with accessibility needs. This event is open to all ages!
Things to bring:
A chair if you want a guaranteed seat (Seating will be limited and prioritized for seniors and those who need it)
Water to stay hydrated
A sweater to stay warm

Help us expand the events series to reclaim space in Chinatown!
This event series has proven that regular cultural events in Chinatown helps bring people to the neighbourhood while enhancing our connection to Chinatown’s living culture, so we’re planning to keep them going beyond September! To help us with the costs of expanding the event series, consider making a donation to the community events fund to make the events free and accessible to as many people as possible.
