3 upcoming events + 3 spots to grab food before collage & karaoke tonight
Get ready to sing some tunes and make a collage
1. Collage & Karaoke to Re-envision 105 Keefer (Tonight! Fri, Jul 28 6-8pm)
We’re hosting Collage & Karaoke Night with Yarrow to re-envision 105 Keefer at the Chinatown Memorial Plaza tonight at 6-8pm. There will also be a special music performance by an award-winning music duo, your favourite childhood Asian snacks and drinks, and, back by popular demand, a free walking tour with designer of the memorial plaza. Bring art supplies and your own chair if you can!
Before you join us, here are 3 Chinatown food spots to grab a quick bite:
Kam Wai Dim Sum (249 E Pender St) — All your classic dim sum faves for takeout to eat at the plaza.
Zhao Mah Bakery (280 E Pender St) — Grab a quick sweet bun to go. Try their specialty pork cookies that’s like a char sui bao (bbq pork), but cookie style.
The Boss (532 Main St) — Have one of their sit-down afternoon combos with a small bite and tea!
If you’d like to see more public community events in Chinatown this year and beyond, please consider making a donation to the community events fund to help keep the momentum going and events accessible and free for everyone.
2. Powell St Festival (Aug 5 and 6)
Our friends at the Powell St Festival is hosting its 47th annual festival to celebrate Japanese Canadian art and culture this August 5-6 in Oppenheimer Park and Paueru Gai.
There will be over 30 dynamic performances from local and international artists, there is bound to be something for everyone—not to mention panels, workshops, walking tours, martial arts demonstrations, our annual Sumo Tournament, and more.
Be sure to join the 360 White Riot Walk, an interactive guided tour that traces the history and route of the mob that attacked the Chinese Canadian and Japanese Canadian communities following the demonstration and parade organized by the Asiatic Exclusion League in Vancouver.
3. Tea + Dim Sum Paint Night with Lucky Munyi (Sat, Aug 12, 6-8pm)
To continue to protest Beedie’s 105 Keefer with our culture and our bodies, we’re putting a twist on “Wine & Paint Nights” to host a free community Tea & Painting Dim Sum night with artist @Lucky.Munyi on Saturday, August 12 from 6 to 8pm. More coming soon!
