Help save Mon Keang School in Chinatown
Give the oldest surviving school in Chinatown a new life by voting
The Wong 黃 Benevolent Association’s Mon Keang School 文彊學校, the oldest surviving Chinese school, is part of the National Trust’s Next Great Save competition and they need your help to save them! They can win a grand prize of $50,000 to restore the school.
The Mon Keang School was established in Vancouver's Chinatown in 1925 at the peak of the Chinese Exclusion Act and its racial discrimination. The School uses cultural language learning to anchor family relationships, strengthen community bonds, and build the local economy of Chinatown.
As a building situated at the heart of Chinatown, Mon Keang is more than just a place for a community-based language school, but also a space that offers intergenerational social gatherings and cultural teachings.
In recent years, the school has been used to host a successful Cantonese Saturday School in partnership with UBC Cantonese and Youth Collaborative for Chinatown since 2016, for adult learners with a focus on “survival Cantonese” that embraces an immersive, place-based experiential approach to language learning.
However, the school is soon approaching its 100th year anniversary and our historical building has significant wear and tear from many years of serving the community.
